You can go to Thailand from Shihanoukville by yourself by bus, although it is quite a very long trip.

Trat bus Terminal - Source: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cookiesound/6684643579/
Tips: There are bus operators such as Rith Mony, Bun Thou, and Virak Buntham Express operate daily air-conditioned minibus service leaving at 8-8:30AM to/from the the border with Thailand at Koh Kong/Hat Lek, taking about 5 hours (as what they say, but the time they spend to pick up passengers along the way plus bad road condition, it may take more than 6 hours!). In November 2013 I took the Virak Buntham Express from Shihanoukville to Koh Kong for a ridiculous 9 USD (ticket for locals, as they say, is 8 USD) departed from 8pm and arrived at 2:30PM!

They will also typically have pickup in front of the offices on the main strip in town at 7:30AM. Other  minibuses also serve this route but even more jam-packed and uncomfortable.

Be prepared for toilet paper, the bus may stop somewhere for lunch and the toilets there are horrible.

At Hat Lek border, after you've done with visa procedure, they'll be minivans to transfer passengers to Trat bus station in Thailand for 120BTH (or 4 USD, you have to pay in BTH) and take about 1 hour 30 minutes. At Trat bus station, you can buy tickets to Bangkok (around 4-5 hours, consider the the traffic jam in Bangkok, too), Pattaya, and other places in Thailand.

How to get to Shihanouk Ville (Cambodia) from Ha Tien (Vietnam) by bus

Cách đi tới Shihanouk Ville (Cambodia) từ Hà Tiên.

Sihanoukville (Khmer: ក្រុងព្រះសីហនុ - Krong Preah Sihanouk), also known as Kampong Saom, is a province (khaet) of Cambodia on the Gulf of Thailand. Sihanoukville's beaches are a popular tourist destination in Cambodia.

Sihanoukville Ville - Self Travel Tips
Tips:

If you want to travel to Sihanoukville Ville by bus from Vietnam, usually take any local bus to Ha Tien Bus Station (Vietamese: Bến xe Hà Tiên), in Hochiminh City (Sài Gòn) it is recommended to take the Kumho Samco Bus Lines (more details here http://kumhosamco.com.vn/en/ho-chi-minh-ha-tien ). At the Ha Tien Bus Station, there'll be a minivan to transfer to Xa Xia (Ha Tien) - Prek Chak (Cambodia) border post.

If you arrive early to the border, there'll be more chances to catch buses. In 2010, Virak Buntham Express started a bus service from Ha Tien in Vietnam to Sihanoukville. Ticket price normally is 10 USD. Most of buses are in bad condition, stop several times to get passengers along the way and it may takes more than 4 hours to get to Sihanouk Ville.

In Sihanouk Ville, if the bus drops you at the bus station which closes to the local market, take a serviced -motobike to the beach (2 kilometers away) for 1 dollar (or 4000 Riel), bargain if they tell the price too high.

Suggested places to stay:

Apple Guest House, (100 metres off Serendipity/Ochheuteal beach.), ☎ +855 97 857 3786. Ochheuteal Beach. 15 clean rooms, close to the center. 2 minutes from the beach, private garden, rooms have cable TV & free Wi-Fi. Motorbike rental, laundry, internet, international calls and a very useful 24/7 convenience store. From $8-$15.

If you travel to Sihanoukville Ville on holidays in Cambodia, the prices may go up a little, a cheapest hostel will ask 10 USD for a very basic room. Go back to the local market to look for cheaper available rooms.

I accidentally visited Sihanoukville Ville on holidays and luckily found a guest house called 'Pheng Heng' near the market for 7 USD/fan room, the room was beautiful and you can go to visit the market in the morning because it is just on the opposite side. Cheapest way get to Old City from Bus Station (Chiangmai)

Cách rẻ nhất đi từ bến xe bus tới phố cổ Chiangmai (Thái Lan)

Chiang Mai has two official bus stations, consisting of 3 terminals:

Chiangmai songthaew - Self Travel Tips

  • Arcade Bus Station (Bus Terminals 2 and 3, Tel. +66 53 242664) — At the far end of Kaeo Narawat Rd just before it meets the superhighway. Buses from and to destinations outside Chiang Mai Province use this station. It effectively has two terminals, separated by a tuk-tuk stand and a road.
Terminal 3 is the larger of the two. It has an Internet cafe, small food vendors, ATMs, the booking window for Green Bus (Window 20), and numerous other ticket sellers. Buses for Bangkok, Phitsanulok, Ubon, Korat, Nan, Luang Prabang, Mae Sot depart from here.
Terminal 2 has a tourist police office, ATMs, food vendors, and many ticket sellers, including the booking office for government buses. Buses depart from here for Bangkok, Phitsanulok, Udon. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to what buses go to which destination from which terminal. There is a good deal of overlap.
  • Chang Phuak Bus Station (Bus Terminal 1, Tel. +66 53 211586) — Off Chang Phuak Rd, on the north side of the moat, about 1 km north of Chang Phuak Gate. This station handles buses within Chiang Mai Province including Mae Rim, Chiang Dao, Fang, Tha Ton, Phrao, Hot, Chom Thong, Doi Tao, and Samoeng.
In lieu of a local bus service, locals get around the city on songthaew (สองแถว). These covered pick-up trucks have two long bench seats in the back (songthaew means "two rows" in Thai), and travel fixed routes picking up passengers en route who are going the same way. Some can also be hired outright.

The colour of the songthaew indicates its general route or usage. Most common by far are red songthaews (called rod daeng, red truck), which don't follow a specific route and roam the main streets around markets, temples, or the bus/train stations. These are the most convenient to take if you are going somewhere specific. Prices must be negotiated. but expect 20 baht anywhere within the city walls and 40-60 baht outside.

How to get to Chiangmai old City from Arcade Bus Station: Take a walk out of the Terminals, look for a series of songthaews waiting in lines, normally you can get to Old City at Tha Phae Gate for 20 BTH, but you have to wait until they get full load of passengers.

How to get to Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep from Old City (Chiangmai)

Cách đi từ phố cổ Chiangmai tới Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep (Thái Lan).

Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep (วัดพระธาตุดอยสุเทพ, Huai Kaeo Rd ) is 18 km from town, sitting at a 1,073 m elevation on the slopes of Doi (Mount) Suthep. Built in 1383 during the Lanna Thai period.

Doi Suthep - Self Travel Tips

How to get there: take a songthaew from your hotel to Chiang Mai Zoo for 20 baht (if you are close to the city walls), show/tell the driver about the temple, they will take you to where there are several songthaews waiting to get a full load of passengers for a trip up the mountain. Normally you can get a bargain for 400BTH for 4 people.

To enter the Doi Suthep itself is free for Thais, and 30 baht for foreigners.

The journey from town can be made by motorcycle or a bicycle with appropriate gearing. The final 12 km from the zoo onwards is entirely uphill and will take 60-90 minutes if cycling.
