How to travel back and forth between Kunming, Dali and Lijiang (China)

There are buses and trains run daily back and forth between Kunming, Dali and Lijiang in Yunnan, China.


Kunming train station - Self Travel Tips
Tips:

From Kunming to Dali:

1. By bus: Buses from Kunming West Bus Station take about 4-4.5 hours, 341km, and cost around ¥103. Add: Chunyu Lu / Yining Lu Intersection, north-east corner, Kunming (Chinese: 昆明春雨路与益宁路交叉口东北侧). Tel: (0871) 65326258.

Bus station serving destinations to Kunming's west, including Lincang, Dehong Prefecture, Jingdong, Lancang, Shangchong, Nujiang Prefecture, Diqing Prefecture, Baoshan, Lijiang, Dali, Tengchong and Shangri-la.

City bus lines: T1, C11, C60, C62, C61, C65, C72, 80, 82, 148, 151, 153, 908

2. By train: There are several night trains from Kunming to Dali Train Station (in Dali New City) leaving 8PM-11PM, and arriving from seven to eight hours later.

From Dali to Kunming, there are night trains schedule at: 8:26PM - 4:43AM, 9:40PM - 5:02AM and 10:20PM-5:21AM. The cost is ¥104 sleeper, ¥89 and ¥65 for day trains hard seat.

Kunming Railway Station (Chinese: 昆明站; pinyin: Kūnmíng Zhàn) located about 4 kilometres from the city centre.

Address: The end of Beijing Road in Guandu District, Kunming City (Chinese昆明市官渡区，北京路尽头). Tel: 0871-3511534. Postcode is 650000. Kunming Station has 6 platforms and 12 tracks.

Lijiang train station - Self Travel Tip

From Kunming to Lijiang:

1. By bus: Buses from Kunming West Bus Station take about 7 hours, 517km and cost around ¥171.

2. By train: Trains from Kunming to Lijiang:
  • K9618/K9619 (10:00~18:48); 
  • K9606/K9607 (20:53~06:33);
  • K9610/K9611 (21:58~07:10); 
  • K9614/K9615 (22:29~07:39)
In 2012, I took the K9610 train from Kunming to Lijiang for ¥90 (seat). The train was clean and comfortable.

 Lijiang Train Station (Chinese: 丽江火车站). Add: Yulong Naxi Zuzi Zhixian, Lijiang (Chinese:丽江玉龙纳西族自治县).

From Dali to Lijiang:

1. By bus: There are many minibuses to go back and forth Dali and Ljiang every day.  It takes about 3.5 hours. The fare is ¥52/66/71/79.

Dali Bus Station located at No.21, Jianshe Road, Xiaguan. It operates bus lines to Kunming and Lijiang, as well as cities in other provinces, such as Panzhihua in Sichuan and Putian in Fujian. From Xiaguan, there is a direct bus (No.4) to the Old Town of Dali.

The fare is around ¥36 (hard seat), ¥153 (sleeper).

Dali Railway Station. Address: : No. 261 Cangshan Road, Xiaguan Town, Dali City 大理Chinese Address: 大理市下关镇苍山路261号. Tel: 0872-3146002. Bus Line: 1,5,8,10, 21. Bus No.8 takes you from train station to Old City of Dali for ¥1.5.

From Lijiang to Dali by train, note that they only have schedule at 8:38AM-10:30AM (in the morning), 3:30PM - 17:51 PM (afternnon) and 8:15PM - 10:04PM (evening). Maybe there's one more train at 9:30AM but I'm not so sure. Ticket price is ¥30 (hard seat).
